The shift toward genuine women’s signatures
Until 2023 the women’s basketball-shoe market was almost entirely men’s flagships repackaged in smaller sizes. The Sabrina 1 (Nike, 2023) changed that — designed from scratch around a women’s foot last, with cushioning calibrated for a woman’s average body weight. The Stewie line (Puma) followed.
Sabrina 2 — the current flagship
Cushlon 3.0 + Zoom Air, low-cut, narrow last. Best-fit for guard and wing play. Available in the full women’s size range plus extended men’s sizing — a common grail for narrow-footed men.
Stewie 3 — Puma’s WNBA signature
Nitro Foam, low-cut, narrow last. Slasher / all-around play style. Lighter and slightly firmer than the Sabrina 2.
Cross-sizing strategy
Women’s-shoe US sizing converts to men’s by subtracting 1.5 (a women’s 9 = men’s 7.5). Men’s flagships in their smallest sizes (US 6.5-7.5) often fit women’s larger sizes well, but the last is calibrated for a man’s foot — typically wider through the forefoot than women’s specs.
Width fit for women
Most women’s basketball shoes run narrow by default (Sabrina and Stewie are both narrow lasts). Wide-footed women’s-sized players have fewer options — sizing up half is common. Look at the New Balance TWO WAY in extended-women’s sizing for genuine wide fit.
Why the WNBA-led signatures matter
Aside from fit, the spec calibration (cushioning density, lockdown tension, traction pattern density) is tuned for the typical women’s-game movement profile — quicker transitions, more half-court isolation, lower average vertical jump impact. They genuinely play differently than men’s flagships.
